You are an active participant in  IBD Partners research prioritization process! Have you ever had a question about IBD that you wish science could answer? Tell us what research is important to you!

Here, you can submit a research idea to the community, cast your votes, and discuss research ideas proposed by other members. Please make your research question as specific as possible. Other members will vote on your research idea, and we will prioritize research ideas with the most votes.

You are allowed to vote for your own proposed research idea if you want. However, you can only vote for a total of five research ideas. If you have already cast your five votes and an idea you like even more is proposed, you can change your votes at any time to reflect your current preferences.

The research team will review all submitted ideas and provide a response to you and to the community. If your idea leads to an IBD Partners Study, you will have the opportunity to serve as a patient collaborator on the research team for that study.

We encourage you to prioritize the ideas that are most important to you, even if the research team determines that your idea is not a good fit for IBD Partners. We will share ideas labeled “Not a Good Fit” with researchers outside of our network when appropriate. We want to make sure all of your votes count!

Thanks for your participation in this important platform to help the IBD research community understand what research questions are important to patients. We are passionate about finding answers to your questions!

Proposed Idea

Is there a correlation between the use of NSAIDS (Ibuprofen) or other medications known to cause a "leaky gut" and the onset/development of IBD?

I took a large amount of Ibuprofen throughout my teen years for migraines. I have been told that taking Ibuprofen now can cause me to come out of remission due to causing a leaky gut and so I am curious to see if these types of medications can cause or trigger the onset of IBD in adolescents or in patient who chronically take these forms of medications.

Study the role that emulsifiers and other additives in our diet may play in IBD symptoms.

I am able to eat home made salad and salad dressing, but almost always get sick on a salad I eat out. Homemade bread, or bread from the chain of Great Harvest bakeries, causes me no problems, but packaged bread does. Rich homemade ice cream causes me no problems, but many packaged ice creams do. Making EVERYTHING from scratch, takes an enormous amount of time. Finding products without any emulsifiers or additives isn't easy; even simple ingredient lists of 5-7 items often contain at least 1. An understanding of even a few things known to be safer or less safe, would expand the repertoire of food I could eat. It's hard to personally test this with a food journal, because many products contain multiple additives. I know from facebook crohns forums, that I am not alone in these issues.

I would like more research done on using the combination of a biologic (Humira) and Azathioprine (Imuran) together for treatment of crohns. Are the benefits really worth the risk? or is the risk not that bad?

I am on both of these meds and I have been questioned by my pharmacist about taking both of them together. I have read about the risks, and I'm not sure if I really do need both of the drugs. The information I have read seems to imply that getting cancer at some point is almost a certainty.

Proposed Idea               Best Fit for Others

We should determine why the prevalence of IBD in developing countries is so low, yet immigrants from those countries and their children are at increased risk of IBD.

This question might help decipher the contribution of genetic and environmental factors (e.g. sunlight, the microbiome, exposure to antibiotics)

Proposed Idea

Researching IBD symptom of fatigue and low energy: normal diet arm vs. supplement arm (Vitamins D3 and B12, and Fish Oil.)

There are many health benefits of being on a plant based diet. However, veganism can be associated with low levels of vitamins D3 and B12. Such as study would determine comprehensive care for patients considering their energy levels, diet, and supplement intake.

Creation of a test to verify or deny IBD in persons struggling with symptoms

It took 16 years to verify my Cohn's, from age 13-29 years. Had all sorts of tests and was treated like I was crazy. Spent a month in treatment due to anorexia because eating was so painful. Diagnosed by having exploratory surgery. Because of that I had malnutrition, lost all my teeth and suffered way too long.

Proposed Idea

Since we know the Microbiome is a key component in Crohns disease, What therapies are being developed to treat the Microbiome?

I see drug companies producing drug after drug for inflammatory processes, which I know is needed for Crohns, but I am wondering when and if targeted Microbiome therapies are in the future of western medicine for Crohns?

How do seasonal allergies correlate with UC or CD flares and management?

I have begun to notice a recent correlation of my personal symptoms with seasonal allergies, and I am wondering if others have experienced this as well, or if antihistamines play any roll in this correlation.

Can positive emotions favorably influence IBD patient status?

Research tends to focus on negative emotional state (depression) and the potential downside. Work by Dr B. Fredrickson shows positive emotions can provide favorable health impact and has developed a simple on line tool to measure positive emotions which could be incorporated into this site to do research going forward.

Proposed Idea

A recent study linked gut problems with food additives/emulsifiers such as polysorbate 80. Would anyone be interested in limiting their diet to prohibit food additives and emulsifiers that are in processed foods to see if it affects disease progression?

Increases in IBD seem to follow economic development, which includes the availability of more processed foods. It would make sense that food is involved with these diseases of the digestive system.
